Risk and Disaster Management Program of Chulalongkorn University organized the Online Emergency Management Workshop 2021 with Free Public Lectures

The Emergency Management Workshop was held from 27 to 29 April 2021 via the Online platform. Jointly organized by the Risk and Disaster Management Program, Graduate School, Chulalongkorn University, with the SATREPS DREAM (Area-BCM) Project, the Disaster and Risk Management Information Systems Research Group, Chulalongkorn University, and the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, this workshop consisted of a series of free public lectures in English language from several experienced professors from Chulalongkorn University, Nagoya Institute of Technology, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, and Keio University; aimed at providing knowledge in the field of business continuity management to public in any career. In total, there were 33 participants, and 11 organizing members joined the event.


Emergency Management Workshop


Day 1 of the workshop commenced with a lecture section was opened for the public, introductory remarks by Asst. Prof. Natt Leelawat, D.Eng. (Director of the Risk and Disaster Management Program, Graduate School, Chulalongkorn University) and Prof. Kenji Watanabe, Ph.D. (Professor of Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan). Asst. Prof. Akira Kodaka, Ph.D. (Assistant Professor of Keio University, Japan), was a moderator of this 3-day event. A lecture was followed by talking in topic “Introduction of Business Continuity Management (BCM)” by Prof. Kenji Watanabe, Ph.D. (Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan). At the end of the lecture part, Takahiro Ono, Ph.D. (Asian Disaster Reduction Center, Japan), gave a talk on “Risk Assessment and Business Impact Analysis”.

After the public lecture section, the workshop was held for Chulalongkorn University’s students. There were 11 students from the Risk and Disaster Management Program, Environment Development and Sustainability Program, and Industrial Engineering Program of Chulalongkorn University, joined the workshop. The group work session 1 began with a discussion and presentation on the topic “BCP Framework” and followed by “BIA: Impact Level Comparison of Prioritized Activities”.

An in-depth discussion of group work session 2 began with “BIA: Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Maximum Tolerable Period of Disruption (MTPD)” and asking the participants to give an example about “BIA Resources, Necessary Resources for Prioritized Activities.” At the end of the first day, it was concluded with group discussion in topic “Risk Impact and Likelihood Comparison Chart.”

Day 2 of the workshop, a lecture section began with the topic “Limitation of Individual BCMs and Needs for PPP-Based BCM with Cases” by Prof. Kenji Watanabe, Ph.D. (Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan).

After the public lecture section, the workshop was held for the same group of students as Day 1. It began with the topic “Resource Damage Estimate,” “Protection and Mitigation Measures for Key Resources,” and “Strategies and Solutions for Key Resources and PAs.”

The group work session 4 focused on design a sustainable service scheme on the topic “Stakeholder analysis of Area-BCM Customer Value Chain Analysis.”

At the end of the second day, it was concluded with group work session 5, and the participants were asked to discuss and present about “Timeline Coordination Interoperability.”

Day 3 of the workshop concentrated on lecturing in totally four topics, begin with “Introduction of Area-BCM” by Asst. Prof. Natt Leelawat, D.Eng. and Jing Tang, D.Eng. (Lecturer of the International School of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University), followed by “Baseline Survey in Area-BCM” by Eri Ino (Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan), followed by talking in topic “Lesson Learned from Area-BCM in Thailand: What are successes and obstacles?” by Kunruthai Meechang, M.Eng. (Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan), and the final topic “Dancing with a Human-centered Design & Innovation Approach: A Case of Natural Disaster Project in Japan” by Assoc. Prof. Jaehyun Park, Ph.D. (Kyoto Institute of Technology, Japan). Lastly, the workshop was ended with an online quiz for the students.



Participants

This workshop is one of the successful activities conducted with significant collaboration with many experts and organizations. In addition, this workshop also can be an example of the online academic activity supporting three Sustainable Development Goals: Goal8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Goal 13 Climate Action.
