Short introduction
The Department of Chemical Technology has the Fuels Research Center, a national research unit, that continuously develops the knowledge in fuel science and engineering, which provides solutions of energy sources for the need of conventional and modern applications.  Our research focuses on three areas: synthetic fuels, proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and circulating fluidized-bed combustor (CFBC).  Each area has a group of 4-6 faculty members and 10-15 graduate students.  The synthetic fuels group develops clean and green fuels from available resources, such as coal and biomass.  The PEMFC group builds up expertise and improves the efficiency of PEM fuel cells in converting chemical energy into electrical power. The CFBC group develops the high-efficiency and environmentally-friendly combustion and gasification processes.
Key research areas:
Synthetic fuels, PEM Fuel cell, Circulating fluidized-bed combustor, Gasification.
Research collaborations
The department has collaborated with a number of universities in North America, Europe, and Asia. Our collaborators in North America are the Department of Chemical Engineering at University of Washington and the Department of Energy and GeoEnvironmental Engineering at Pennsylvania State University in U.S.A. and the Department of Chemical Engineering at University of Waterloo in Canada. In Europe, the department has long collaborated with the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse in France and the School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering, University of Leeds in UK. The program also has a strong collaboration with the Department of Chemical System Engineering at the University of Tokyo and the Department of Material Systems Engineering and Life Science at University of Toyama in Japan.
