Short introduction
In the age of globalization and information technology, English has become an important means of communication for people around the world. In Thailand, though English is not usually necessary for people’s daily communication, it is an important foreign language that Thai people use for educational purposes, careers, and communication with people from other countries. The Basic Education Curriculum B.E. 2544 (A.D. 2001), in particular, has suggested schools in Thailand to offer English as a required foreign language subject for grade 1 to 12 students. The Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University has been aware of the importance of preparing qualified teachers to serve the needs of English instruction in Thailand, so it has offered a Master’s degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language since B.E. 2505 (A.D. 1962). This program is designed for new graduates who have no teaching experience but are interested in pursuing a teaching career in English as well as for experienced English teachers who want to further their study in the field. The TEFL program aims to enhance graduate students’ abilities and skills in teaching English as a foreign language to EFL students and to train students to conduct research to improve English instruction. The courses in the program are taught using English as the medium of instruction in order to build students’ confidence and skills in using English for communication and academic purposes. The student-teacher ratio is low, so there is a lot of student contact with the faculty. " |
